Il travaglio indotto può ridurre le complicazioni alla nascita senza incrementare i parti cesarei. La ricerca, opera di un gruppo di scienziati della University of Edinburgh e della University of Western Australia, è stata pubblicata sul ‘British Medical Journal’. L’induzione del travaglio dopo le 37 settimane di gestazione può ridurre la mortalità perinatale senza aumentare la probabilità del parto cesareo.
Gli scienziati hanno analizzato dati provenienti da 1,2 milioni di donne scozzesi con gravidanze singole che hanno dato alla luce neonati oltre le 37 settimane di gestazione in un periodo compreso fra il 1981 e il 2007. Nelle gravidanze fra 37 e 41 settimane, l’induzione del travaglio ha ridotto il tasso della mortalità rispetto alle aspettative: per esempio, a 40 settimane di gestazione si registrava un tasso di mortalità perinatale dello 0,08 per cento, mentre nel gruppo di controllo era dello 0,18 per cento.
E il tutto senza aumentare il ricorso ai parti cesarei. Gli scienziati, tuttavia, sottolineano che si verificava un tasso di ammissione nelle unità mediche neonatali speciali, come le incubatrici, dell’8 per cento nei bambini che erano nati con travaglio indotto, rispetto al 7,3 per cento del gruppo di controllo.
