La Toscana sarà la prima Regione in Italia a offrire lo screening gratuito per la malattia di Chagas, all’interno del percorso di assistenza per la gravidanza per tutte le donne latino americane.
Lo stabilisce una delibera approvata ieri dalla giunta, e il programma di screening e assistenza della Regione Toscana è stato presentato stamani nel corso di un convegno che si tenuto al Meyer, organizzato da Regione, AOU Meyer e AOU Careggi, al quale ha portato il suo saluto anche il neo assessore al diritto alla salute Luigi Marroni.
”La Toscana ha sempre avuto un’attenzione particolare a tutto il percorso materno-infantile – ha sottolineato Marroni – mettendo in atto numerose iniziative per tutelare al meglio la salute di mamme e bambini. Questo protocollo, rivolto alle donne latino americane, che sono comunque una fetta importante delle presenze di migranti nella nostra regione, è un passo ulteriore in questa direzione: riconoscere per tempo le madri con questa malattia consente di identificare tempestivamente i bambini che l’hanno contratta dalla madre e trattarli precocemente in maniera molto efficace”.
La malattia di Chagas è causata dal protozoo Trypanosoma cruzi, trasmesso all’uomo da insetti ematofagi (triatomine) presenti solo in America Latina, dove l’infezione colpisce dallo 0,2 al 15% della popolazione, a seconda degli stati.
Le principali conseguenze della malattia sono a carico del cuore, dell’apparato gastroenterico e del sistema nervoso.
