Perchè si starnutisce sotto il sole?

Se quando fissate il Sole vi viene da starnutire, non preoccupatevi, non siete soli. Una nuova ricerca pubblicata sulla rivista PLoS ONE rivela infatti che lo starnutire guardando il Sole è più comune di quanto si pensi: dal 18 al 35 per cento delle persone sembra avere una sensazione di formicoli al naso quando osservano della luce intensa.
Inoltre, sembrano esserci delle basi genetiche per questo fenomeno: se capita a voi, c’e’ una buona probabilità che capiti anche ai vostri familiari. Perfino il numero di volte di starnuti è uguale di famiglia in famiglia.
“L’effetto puo’ essere causato anche dall’uscire in macchina fuori da un tunnel o da un cinema in una giornata luminosa. Per comprendere cosa c’è esattamente alla base di questo fenomeno, abbiamo messo a confronto 10 individui che starnutiscono al Sole con 10 che non lo fanno tramite elettroencefalogramma”, ha spiegato Nicolas Langer, ricercatore dell’Università di Zurigo.
“Ne è risultato che la reazione di starnuto causata dal Sole non è quella classica che avviene nel cervello durante uno starnuto normale, ma coinvolge invece delle aree della corteccia differenti”, ha aggiunto. Langer teorizza che chi starnutisce al sole abbia una corteccia visiva più sensibile, e una sua iperstimolazione causa uno starnuto. Un’altra ipotesi è che in queste persone, il nervo ottico e il nervo trigemino sono molto ravvicinati, e che la stimolazione dell’occhio causi una sorta di corto circuito nel segnale e di conseguenza la voglia di starnutire.
