Il dolore cronico dipende da quanto comunicano fra loro due specifiche aree cerebrali. Lo studio della Northwestern Medicine è stato pubblicato su “Nature Neuroscience”. E’ la prima volta che si mostra che il dolore cronico può essere predetto da alcuni cambiamenti cerebrali.
In particolare, questo tipo di disturbo è annunciato da quanto comunicano fra loro due sezioni del cervello: l’area legata alle emozioni e quella legata al comportamento motivazionale. Maggiore è la loro comunicazione e maggiori saranno le probabilità che il paziente sviluppi dolore cronico.
I ricercatori sono stati capaci di predire con un’accuratezza dell’85 per cento se i partecipanti allo studio avrebbero sviluppato dolore cronico proprio studiando i “rapporti” fra corteccia frontale e nucleo accumbens. Gli scienziati hanno studiato un totale di 40 volontari che accusavano dolore cronico alla schiena, scoprendo anche una perdita di materia grigia, che è legata a meno connessioni sinaptiche .
