Nell’autismo ha un ruolo il sistema immunitario

Cambiamenti specifici in un sistema immunitario iperattivo possono contribuire all’insorgenza dell’autismo nei topi. Lo rivela una nuova ricerca del California Institute of Technology negli USA, che ha scoperto un collegamento tra irregolarità nel sistema immunitario durante la gravidanza e l’autismo.
La ricerca, l’ultima di una serie di studi del Caltech sul ruolo del sistema immunitario nella’utismo, è stata pubblicata sulla rivista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Abbiamo creato un modello animale con femmine di topi incinte in cui scatenato la stessa risposta immunitaria che avrebbero avuto a seguito di un’infezione virale. Questa semplice reazione si è tramutata in anormalità
comportamentali e neuropatologie di tipo autistico nella prole” ha spiegato Elaine Hsia, ricercatrice a capo dello studio.
“I nuovi nati presentavano i classici segnali di comportamento autistico. In seguito, abbiamo analizzato il loro sistema immunitario e scoperto numerosi parallelismi con le persone che soffrono di autismo, cioè iperattività del sistema e bassi livelli di cellule T che riducono la risposta immunitaria”.
I ricercatori sottolineano che i risultati sui topi non sono immediatamente trasferibili anche sugli esseri umani, ma che esiste una relazione tra cambiamenti del sistema immunitario nel periodo prenatale e l’insorgenza dell’autismo.
