”L’età non è un limite per l’attività subacquea, sport in ambiente estremo dove i problemi nascono piuttosto per l’improvvisazione dei singoli” ha detto Luca Revelli, esperto di medicina del mare al Policlinico Gemelli di Roma, nonche’ istruttore sub. In Italia, che è culla della cultura subacquea e sede di grandi marchi industriali del settore, ”c’è da 40 anni una grande tradizione – ha sottolineato il medico – e non a caso l’età media per l’attivià’ sportiva amatoriale è elevatissima, attorno ai 35 anni. Considerando che molte scuole di diving hanno allievi a partire dai 14 anni, per avere quella media significa che gli anziani sono molti. E gli over 65 possono fare immersioni – ha affermato Revelli – ma dovrebbero sottoporsi ogni anno a visita medica specialistica, quella che richiede elettrocardiogramma sotto sforzo, valutazioni dei volumi polmonari, esami delle urine. Possono immergersi anche persone con diabete o con patologie neurologiche, ma sempre sotto controllo medico specialistico per la valutazione ad personam dei rischi essenzialmente legati all’aumento della pressione e all’assunzione dei gas durante l’immersione”.
In possesso di brevetti da sub sono ad oggi circa 500mila italiani. Molti tuttavia sono i cosiddetti ”brevetti arruginiti”, quelli cioè ottenuti magari in una settimana di vacanza a Sharm El Sheik e poi dimenticati nel cassetto. ”Nelle scuole – ha osservato l’esperto di medicina del mare – si tende sempre più a brevettare o giovanissimi o anziani. Lungo gli 8mila chilometri di coste nazionali, sta crescendo il ‘Dan’, il 118 dei subacquei. A questa rete la Protezione Civile sta affiancando, sulle spiagge, le iniziative del piano ‘Mare sicuro’, mentre restano storicamente poche le camere iperbariche. In termini di numeri di incidenti, l’attività subacquea registra un numero minore di incidenti del calcio e persino del bowling, ha detto ancora il medico. Ma quando ci sono incidenti, spesso sono mortali. Serve infatti a poco – ha sottolineato – l’assistenza precoce nei casi di annegamento, sincope, embolia gassosa, mentre offrono un valido aiuto le guardie turistiche e la rete Dan nelle patologie intermedie, come l’infarto, e nei casi meno gravi. Dietro agli incidenti dei sub – ha concluso – i problemi sono perlopiù legati a improvvisazione di sportivi inesperti, o all’imprudenza dei subacquei più giovani. L’immersione è una gioia enorme, ma la sfida a se stessi in ambienti estremi, come nei relitti o in acque con poca visibilità, rende questa attività pericolosa. E non aiutano gli affitti all’acqua di rose di bombole, talvolta noleggiate senza richiesta di brevetto”.
