Scoperto come il virus dell’influenza disarma il sistema immunitario

Un team di scienziati della Northwestern University ha scoperto in che modo un virus dell’influenza disarma e inganna il sistema immunitario degli esseri umani. La ricerca pubblicata sul Journal of Biological Chemistry lascia emergere una nuova correlazione tra il virus e l’organismo ospitante, svelando che il primo agisce sulla produzione di una proteina importante per le nostre difese immunitarie.
Le proteine oggetto dell’attacco virale sono “proteine chiave” del sistema immunitario incluse nelle cellule umane del polmone per combattere intrusi e invasori. Il virus stravolge la proteina influenzando il microRna, piccoli frammenti di Rna che ne regolano il comportamento.
I ricercatori coordinati dal biologo Curt M. Horvath sono tra i primi a mostrare come il virus dell’influenza può modificare l’espressione del microRna e controllare le risposte immunitarie nelle cellule umane del polmone. Conoscere in che modo il virus annienta le difese del corpo e attacca la salute delle persone permetterà di sviluppare trattamenti maggiormente mirati e più efficaci per sconfiggere l’influenza.
