In Australia primo impianto al mondo di occhio bionico

Specialisti australiani hanno impiantato con successo il prototipo di un occhio bionico in una donna affetta da una profonda menomazione visiva, retinite pigmentosa, una condizione ereditaria. E’ la prima volta al mondo che un simile congegno viene impiantato dietro la retina.
La donna, Dianne Ashworth, ha riacquistato in qualche misura la vista quando il prototipo, impiantato in maggio nell’ospedale per gli occhi e le orecchie di Melbourne, è stato attivato il mese scorso. Il congegno a 24 elettrodi è stato progettato, costruito e testato da un’equipe del Bionics Institute ed è stato inserito dalla specialista oculistica Penny Allen.
”Abbiamo impiantato un congegno in posizione dietro la retina, dimostrando la fattibilità del nostro approccio”, ha detto Allen. L’occhio bionico è stato attivato e stimolato solo dopo che l’occhio aveva completamente recuperato dopo l’operazione, ha spiegato. ”Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi, ma d’improvviso ho potuto vedere un piccolo lampo. E’ stato incredibile”, ha detto oggi la signora Ashworth.
”Ogni volta che il congegno era stimolato, una forma diversa mi compariva davanti all’occhio”. I ricercatori del Bionics Institute lavorano ora con la paziente per determinare cosa vede ogni volta che la retina è stimolata, in cerca di regolarità di forme, di luminosità, grandezza e posizione dei bagliori, per determinare come il cervello interpreta queste formazioni, ha detto il direttore dell’Istituto, Rob Shepherd. ”Quando saremo in possesso di queste informazioni uniche, potremo massimizzare la nostra tecnologia man mano che si evolve”, ha aggiunto.
